Considering a Reciprocal Relationship Between Choreographic Frameworks and Generative AI

AI as a Dialectic Tool: A Philosophical Stance on Technology and Creativity – The landscape of artistic creation is continually shaped and reshaped by technology, and now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands as the latest, and perhaps most profound, force challenging and expanding our notions of art. AI is not a threat to human creativity, but a powerful, and potentially transformative tool that can significantly expand our considerations of creativity and the creative process.

My philosophy positions AI not as a replacement for human ingenuity, but as a catalyst for divergent thinking. Creators can use AI to generate what they don’t do well, and as such help facilitate innovative approaches to processes for creative work. For example, AI can process vast datasets, to uncover patterns or suggest combinations a human mind might overlook, pushing the thinking about the boundaries of how the creator might design, communicate or experience something. The intersection of technology and processes for creativity can become a fertile ground for discovery when humans realize AI as a tool. Such realization can occur in iterative processes where the process of drafting is augmented by human-AI dialectic interaction with the human creator editing, and reworking for another iteration. It is this back and forth process of dialectic interaction where creators can try to learn and figure things out. When a prompt is given to an AI, its output is a seemingly perfect answer; it doesn't struggle, and it normally does not get confused, and normally does not go beyond its programming to risk being ‘wrong’. It offers a seemingly balanced arrangement of parts where the answers are put together perfectly. Whereas the labor of the creator’s learning—the struggle to accept missteps, shift one's perspective, and make one wrestle with doubt—it is not a side effect, but the fertile soil for creativity. This internal conflict ultimately gives birth to and illuminates the wisdom found within most creative endeavors. Thus, AI serves not as a tool for synthesizing ideas, since its nature in these interactions is immutable. Instead, it functions as a dialectical loop, mirroring the creator's propositions. It is the immutability of the AI that serves as a stopping point where the AI does not struggle to grasp; rather what is offered is a sort of silence in the dialectic interactions. The creator takes hold through the struggle of leaving the AI to remain the same.

The widespread emergence of AI as a creative tool—necessitates a strong, corresponding emphasis on ethical engagement and professional responsibility. The core pedagogical tenet, therefore, is that AI must augment, rather than supplant, the creator's authentic artistic voice and capacity for critical thought. In this context, the role of AI is redefined as a dialectic tool, providing input to be scrutinized rather than delivering definitive creative resolutions. The overarching objective here is to empower creators to leverage AI for pushing creative boundaries while rigorously maintaining integrity, originality, and a robust sense of creative agency. For creative professionals, AI presents an opportunity to enhance their processes within an art world increasingly shaped by algorithmic tools.
